When a person is cremated, the ashes are handed to the deceased's family. Some people are unsure about the process of cremation and what they can do with the ashes. Blair Mazzarella Funeral Home is eager to provide information to clients to make the process easier for them.

Scattering Ashes in Different Locations

Following are some options for scattering or disposing of cremains:

  • Many families prefer to bury/scatter the ashes at sea, which is a beautiful way to honor the deceased. Some people include this in their wills because they find it comforting to know that their ashes will not serve as a constant reminder to their loved ones that they are no longer alive. Before scattering the ashes at sea, make sure you know the state and the federal rules.

  • Another alternative is to spread the ashes in a natural setting such as the mountains; again, make sure you check local rules first.

Some Alternatives

You can bury the urn in a cemetery or place it in a niche in a columbarium there if you don't want to scatter the ashes or retain them in your home. This step allows you to pay tribute to the person whenever you want. Some people prefer to keep the urn with the ashes at home.

Create a small memorial/nook in your backyard and place the urn there as another method to keep your loved one near to you. You can turn it into a beautiful place by planting some flowering shrubs or a tree and making it a special place where you can pay your respects to your loved one whenever you wish.
