4 Funeral Etiquette Tips You Need to Know

Attending funeral services allows you to say goodbye to a departed family or friend while also showing support to those in grief. It signifies that the deceased was well-liked, which brings some comfort during this difficult time. Blair Mazzarella Funeral Home recommends the following etiquette to ensure that you do not cause unnecessary stress to the mourning family:

1. Be Appropriately Dressed for the Occasion

Attending a funeral in casual attire, such as jeans and a T-shirt, is considered rude. Although you may believe that the colors and styles of your clothes are unimportant, they are. Darker formal attire in a modest style seems courteous and fitting for such a sad occasion. Make sure you're dressed correctly, in muted tones and monotone hues.

2. Be Punctual

It is never acceptable to be late at a funeral. We recommend arriving well before the service begins. Take note of any road conditions or diversions that may cause you to be late. If you arrive late, sit towards the rear to avoid causing a disturbance.

3. Do Not Take Calls

It is disrespectful to answer the phone or read texts while at a funeral ceremony, so turn it off or set it to mute. If you need to take a call, go outside silently and after you finish, return to the venue only after service is over.

4. Select Appropriate Words

While it may seem that offering condolences are simple, sometimes things that people say sound inconsiderate and sometimes cruel to the bereaved. If you're at a loss for words, try "I'm sorry for what occurred; is there anything I can do to help?" Such condolences provide comfort while also displaying your support.
