Obituary of Gloria Chasnoff

Gloria Chasnoff Obituary Born August 14th 1944 in the Bronx to Hilda and Moe Bedine. Died November 10th, 2025 in Brooklyn. She graduated from Far Rockaway High School in 1962 and went on to study Education at Long Island University, where she earned a Bachelors in 1965. At Brooklyn College she earned her Masters Degree in Education. In 1964, Gloria Bedine met Howard Chasnoff, when they were both counselors at Edalia sleepaway camp in upstate New York. Gloria married Howard in 1967 and went on to have two children, Larry and Tara. Their love, devotion and companionship propelled them through fifty-six years of marriage. After graduating she worked as an elementary school teacher until her first child was born. She stayed home for seven years to raise her children. Then, she spent the remainder of her career as an Educational Evaluator until her retirement in 2002. An avid tennis player for over forty years, she had a wicked slice and an uncanny ability to return any ball. A huge reader, she was always with a book in hand, sharing her favorites, having serious and silly discussions with family, friends and two book clubs. As a grandparent, she was a quintessential part of her six grandchildrens’ lives: Hannah, Jake, Veronica, Lila, Esther and Maggie. Family photos often feature Gloria with a book in hand and a child or two or three on her lap. Initially, she learned to play the guitar to sing to her students, but wound up singing to her grandchildren as well. After retirement, to keep her brain young and spry, she took up the cello. Howie’s plan was to have a partner for duets. As volunteers in the Chesed program, she and Howie delivered Shabbat baskets for immobile congregants of Bay Ridge Jewish Center. In addition, for years she visited elders in the community who could no longer leave their homes. She enjoyed having her summers off, mainly staying at a cottage community, Terra Alta, where she made life long friends, who meant the world to her. Gloria was predeceased by her husband, Howie, who she took care of as his health declined, by her niece Tova and by her parents Hilda nee Treiber and Moe Bedine. She is survived by her sister in law Judith, children Larry and Tara, daughter in-law Michelle Lieberman, son in-law David Mickenberg, grand niece Sophie, nephew Eric and his children Stan and Nina, and grandchildren Lila, Esther, Hannah, Jake, Veronica and Maggie. Services will be held at the Jewish Funeral Service of Brooklyn on November 12, 2025. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to American Cancer Society, an organization dedicated to ending colon cancer.
